Kathryn Bailie

Kathryn was brought up in Ayr, learning the Violin with Ian Tyre and travelling far and wide with the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra, Strathclyde Schools’ Symphony Orchestra and NYOS in her youth.

She continued her Violin studies at the RSAMD with Jerri Gibson followed by Edwin Paling. Baroque Violin became her second study and she was lucky to be involved in a one-off Baroque Concert with Cat Mackintosh at the Wigmore Hall, all the players were a “Catherine” of sorts, hence the Concert was called the Catherine Wheel – Felix, the bassoonist, was only just allowed to sneak in! Other highlights included a tour of Japan with the first NYOS Camerata and performing The Planets in the Albert Hall with NYOS at The Proms.

After her studies she freelanced with RSNO and started her teaching career. Fairly soon, teaching became the chosen path along with playing in Wedding Quartets and for various Amateur Dramatic Musicals. Currently she teaches as a Peripatetic Upper Strings Instructor in East Renfrewshire, Hutchesons’ Grammar, Inverclyde, and Lomond School and as Conductor of Inverclyde Schools’ Junior String Orchestra.

She is very much looking forward to exploring more Fiddle Music with the Workshops and being more involved in the village. It will also be great to get in touch with old colleagues and acquaintances; Chris Stout, Alistair McCulloch and Finlay MacDonald are top of the list in the search of new tunes!
