HOW CAN YOU HELP?
The Workshop, in terms of its core teaching programme, concerts, touring programme and come and try events faces some challenging financial problems.
Because of the comparative remoteness of the area, tutors need to be “imported” from the central belt. Whilst we are enormously lucky in the quality and commitment of our tutors, the fact that they have to come from Edinburgh, and often need overnight accommodation, means the workshop has to find considerably more funds than a group in, say, central Glasgow or Edinburgh, who can simply pay for a few hours tuition. Our tutors have to invest at least a day’s work each week, and have substantially higher traveling costs.
The core costs of teaching can never be covered by subscriptions and attendance fees, as the true costs, including administration, would amount to £13.00 per week per member, whether children or adults, which would be beyond many members pockets, particularly if added to the cost of the purchase , or hire , of a fiddle.
Our concert programme also has a dual shortfall of cash. Bands, travelling costs and accommodation costs can be a substantial extra cost over the negotiated fee for playing. We are emphatic that we should retain the quality of musicians and bands playing at the concerts, rather than just looking for “cheap” acts.
Equally we have an intentional policy of keeping concert ticket prices within everyone’s reach. Typically we charge £5.00 for adults, and £2.50 for children, for concerts which might cost £10.00-£12.00 in the city. This is partly because we are still building our audiences, but most importantly because we feel that those uninitiated to traditional music could easily be put off by the commercial rate that we would need to charge if we rural card too strongly, it is also worth noting that the average income of a full time worker in Argyll is almost the lowest in Scotland, and some 25% behind the main cities.
To some extent these shortfalls are made up by public funds, but we can never assume that these will be permanently available. To date members have helped raise money by raffles and by helping raise substantial money at our Arts, Crafts and Music weekend arranged in August 2003.
Our focus on private fund raising is, as far as possible, to ensure that the community both gets a benefit and has some fun whilst we are raising money.
Over the next year we are planning:
A minimum of 6 concerts.
A further Arts, Crafts and Music Weekend.
An author, storytelling and music event.A Come and Try tour and concerts in Schools, Retirement Homes and Community venues in Cowal and Argyll.
These plans cannot come to fruition without your help.
Whether you are a fiddler, whether you live in Loch Goil, whether you attend events or not, IF you believe that arranging an increasing number of local events is good for the community, and that having a wider variety of activities on offer is beneficial to everyone, we hope you will support our efforts.
There are various ways that businesses and individuals have helped financially in the past, and can help in the future:
You can…..
SPONSOR A CONCERT
An excellent way for a business, or individual, to combine the benefits of bringing good quality music to the public with some commercial benefit through the publicity
generated through press articles, flyers, and posters.
On average our concerts cost £3-400.00 more per event than is raised in ticket sales. It would be more than that if it was not for the team of volunteers who distribute leaflets etc. On average 800 leaflets and 14 posters are produced for each concert, and 100-180 people attend. There are usually two press articles published.
If you sponsor a concert for £300.00 your company/business would get coverage on all these items, along the lines of : “The McGenerous Ltd. Concert presents…”, or “This concert is sponsored and supported by McClever Co.”
Our first commercial sponsor is Loch Fyne Oyster Ltd who are supporting a tour of Cowal and Argyll in May 2004, which involves concerts and recitals in schools and retirement homes, as well as public concerts, culminating in come and try events and concerts at the Cairndow Food Fair on 30th and 31st May 2004. See forthcoming events.
SPONSOR A WORKSHOP OR A CLASS
Leaving out administration and marketing costs entirely, our programme of 26 teaching weeks costs £10,300.00 or thereabouts. Each of the 26 workshops thus costs us just under £400.00. Each class in that day costs £50.00. You can sponsor a class all through the year, a Saturday workshop, or one class. Contact us about your idea-we’ll work out how best to acknowledge your generosity.
Also….
BECOME A FRIEND OF THE FIDDLE WORKSHOP
The ideal way of supporting the aims and objectives of the workshop for those who want to help and/or would like to be kept informed of developments.
Becoming a Friend of the Workshop only costs £15.00 a year, although larger donations are not turned down!
The benefits to you of becoming a Friend of LFW are:
· You will receive prior notification of events, and priority booking, before event tickets go on sale to the general public.
· You will receive a free copy of "Goil Fiddlers", a newsletter for the benefit of members and supporters of LFW.
· You will have a real say in what events are arranged in the future
· You will know that you are having a very real effect on "bringing the music back to where it belongs", and contributing to a pleasure that will benefit Loch Goil and the surrounding area for generations to come.
The benefits to us of you joining as a Friend are that:
· Our time (and costs) will be saved by knowing who is interested in what type of event, thus avoiding the wastage of flyers etc.
· By showing public funders the commitment of our supporters, we are more likely to be able to raise money to expand, vary and experiment with different types of events.
· We will raise much-needed money!
